My favorite sight all my life was sitting on the mountain top watching the setting sun dropping toward the Pacific horizon when the valley below me began to ripple like waves on the beach and a great chasm opened wide swallowing the city below I sat unable to speak. The mountain below my feet shook violently, trees toppled; I fell to my knees hoping I too did not meet a fate entombed in a dirt grave.
The shaking stopped, I rose nervously to my feet and looked out once again toward the sea and half of my city was gone the remained in smoking ruin, Mother Nature had once again enacted her authority over mankind.
I walked on wobbly legs toward where I left my car but it was not where I left it I saw the crumpled metal at the bottom of the ravine burning.
I began my walk toward the unknown wondering if what I owned would be like my car, gone forever.
