This is always a controversy among gun folk but I’ll give it a shot.
I’ve been a big gun advocate all my life having my first gun, a .22 rifle, at age 12.
When I think of everything that’s available hand guns, rifles and shotguns what do I feel is the best all around weapon?
I have to choose a shotgun.
Why? It can serve two purposes – personal protection and hunting putting food on the table.
The personal protection aspect is important and a shotgun is something no one in their right mind will wish to come face-to-face with. The firepower is devastating and the destruction to soft tissue is gruesome and usually fatal.
Just the deafening roar of the blast out of the muzzle and the 3-foot flash of fire can dispel the myth that it’s not much of a threat to face.
There are many types of shotguns out there what do I choose? We see single shots, side by sides, semi-automatic, automatic or pump?
My choice is a pump shotgun capable of holding 5-6 shotgun shells and can be fired in rapid succession if need be.
Not what to buy…
You don’t need to spend big bucks to get an excellent pump shotgun and two that are relatively comparable come to mind.
Remington 870 Express Shotgun – $400
Mossberg 500A – $400
Hmm…same price – which is better – simple both have been extensively tested and come out equal.
What gauge do I buy to suit my needs?
This can be a challenge but for protection and hunting I suggest a 12 gauge. It has an infinite variety of ammo available for a very affordable price 100 shells of 7-1/2 shot is less than $30 at Wal-mart.
Killing a deer, hog or smaller game putting food on your table or defending your family against an intruder its my pick.
